Walkthrough: order sync between Shopify and ERP export
A brand sells on Shopify and fulfills from an ERP that only accepts a nightly file drop. Ops pastes orders into a spreadsheet every morning, then someone reformats columns for the ERP. Missed rows mean late shipments and angry customers.
We build a webhook listener for new and updated orders, a transform layer that maps SKUs and addresses into the ERP shape, an error queue for mismatches, and alerts when a SKU is unknown. Successful rows land in the nightly export or API path the ERP supports. Ops reviews exceptions, not every order.
The first version focuses on the happy path and clear failure modes. We do not claim the ERP is modern if it is not. We make the fragile parts visible and owned. Ops gets a short runbook: what green looks like, where alerts land, and who decides when a SKU mapping needs a human update.

ERP and legacy adjacency
Full ERP replacement is rare and expensive. More often we integrate adjacent systems: inventory snapshots, order status, customer master sync, and exports into the ERP on the schedule it can accept. When the legacy system has no API, we evaluate SFTP, scheduled exports, or carefully scoped bridges and label fragility honestly.

When not to buy custom API integration yet
If a single Zapier recipe covers a low-volume, low-risk flow and someone owns failures, keep it. If the vendor has no API and refuses exports, integration theater will not help. If nobody can define the source of truth for a field, resolve ownership before coding.
Skip custom work if you are about to replace the source system next month. Integrate after the system of record decision is stable.
Also skip if every department wants bidirectional sync on day one with no conflict rules. Start with one high-value direction, prove reliability, then expand. Ambiguous ownership of fields is a people problem that code cannot paper over.

Do you only integrate cloud tools?
